YMCA to vacate Huntsville Utilities building, seeks new downtown location
The Huntsville area YMCA is on the hunt for a new downtown location as it prepares to vacate its current space in the Huntsville Utilities building, where it has operated for 15 to 20 years. Interim YMCA CEO Jeff Collen stated that the relocation is necessary due to Huntsville Utilities’ growth and need for the space, a situation clarified by spokesperson Gary T. Whitley Jr. The utility company has confirmed its plans to repurpose the area currently occupied by the YMCA.
This move comes during a challenging time for the Heart of the Valley YMCA, which is navigating Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. Earlier this year, a court approved the sale of the YMCA’s Camp Cha-La-Kee property in Guntersville for $2.35 million. However, Collen stressed that the upcoming relocation is not linked to the organization’s financial difficulties, clarifying that the departure is solely due to the utilities’ requirements.
YMCA members were informed via a letter from Collen that August 31 will mark the last day at the current location. He assured members that the organization is committed to finding a new downtown space that will adequately serve its community’s needs. The YMCA is optimistic about its future transition and aims to provide a facility that will meet or exceed past offerings.
