UAH building track and field complex, upgrading fitness center
The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is set to enhance its athletic facilities and fitness center following recent approvals from the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees. The board granted Stage III approval for a new track and field complex, designed by Chapman Sisson Architects, allowing UAH to begin advertising and bidding for the project, which has an allocated budget of $14.2 million. This facility, located on the west side of John Wright Drive, will be UAH’s first on-campus track and is anticipated to significantly benefit the university’s track and field program and support recruitment efforts.
Athletic Director Cade Smith emphasized the program’s recent successes, noting that the new facility will enable the hosting of Gulf South Conference and NCAA championship events. The complex will feature an NCAA-compliant, 400-meter, 8-lane running track, along with amenities such as locker rooms, a press box, and a field house.
In addition, the board approved preliminary stages for renovations of the University Fitness Center, with a budget of $1.2 million aimed at improving and modernizing the aging facility by enhancing interior layouts and maintenance. Ronnie Hebert, vice president for student affairs, highlighted the increasing student engagement in recreation, stating that these updates will improve the overall experience for both students and community members. The fitness center upgrades and the track complex are expected to be completed by late 2026, pending additional approvals.
