MBUSI To Manufacture New ‘Core Segment’ Vehicle Beginning In 2027
Mercedes-Benz Expands Local Production in Alabama
TUSCALOOSA, AL — On Thursday, Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI) announced plans to manufacture a new core segment vehicle at its Vance plant starting in 2027. This expansion aims to enhance the site’s significance within the company’s global production framework. Jason Hoff, CEO of Mercedes-Benz North America, emphasized that localizing a core model in Tuscaloosa will strengthen connections to the North American market, where popular models like the GLE and GLS originated.
The new vehicle will be tailored to meet U.S. customer preferences, aligning with MBUSI’s local-for-local production strategy. Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, remarked that the Tuscaloosa facility, in operation since 1997, has been pivotal in producing over 4.5 million vehicles, serving as a global export hub for luxury SUVs, including the GLE, GLS, and EQ-series.
In 2022, the Vance plant produced approximately 260,000 vehicles, underscoring its critical role in the company’s operations. This latest initiative represents a natural progression in Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to deepen its ties to the U.S. market and enhance its production capabilities. As the company moves forward, the expansion is set to fortify Alabama’s status as a vital part of Mercedes-Benz’s global strategy.
