Tragic Incident Claims Life of Alabama Power Contract Worker
A contract worker for Alabama Power has been tragically identified as the victim of a fatal accident involving a falling tree in Birmingham over the weekend. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed the deceased as 57-year-old Jeffrey Scott Duffie, who resided in Daviston, Tallapoosa County. Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates reported that Duffie was employed by Utility Line Construction Services, which had been contracted by Alabama Power to address power line repairs following severe storms that swept through the area on Friday night.
The accident occurred around 10 a.m. on Saturday along 21st Avenue South, commonly referred to as Diaper Row in the Redmont Park neighborhood. First responders from the Birmingham Police and Fire and Rescue Service arrived on the scene to find two individuals injured, with one person trapped beneath the fallen tree or its limbs. Despite efforts to save him, Duffie was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:36 a.m. A second victim was transported to the hospital, although details regarding their injuries remain undisclosed.
This heartbreaking incident underscores the dangers faced by utility workers, especially in the wake of inclement weather. As authorities continue their investigation, community members are mourning the loss of Duffie, who was dedicated to his job and serving the local area.
