Beloved vacant Birmingham shopping mall will soon be home to a well-known medical practice
Homewood City Council Approves Andrews Sports Medicine Facility at Brookwood Village
In a recent meeting, the Homewood City Council unanimously approved plans to convert part of the old Brookwood Village mall into a new 131,000-square-foot medical facility for Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center. This project will occupy the space formerly held by the Belk department store, but a timeline for its commencement has yet to be established. Paul Darden, representing the mall’s ownership, emphasized the project’s significance for the property’s future.
Once a bustling retail hub since its opening in 1974, Brookwood Village has suffered from declining occupancy over the past five years following the closure of multiple stores and restaurants. Throughout its history, the mall underwent renovations in the ’80s and ’90s, with a notable streetscape addition in 2001. Despite various proposals, including mixed-use developments or residential facilities, concerns remain about the property’s overall redevelopment. Resident Jeremy Love voiced opposition, advocating for a more comprehensive development strategy.
However, council members voiced optimism that the Andrews facility could serve as a catalyst for renewed interest and activity in the area. Councilman Carlos Aleman expressed that establishing an anchor could enhance the vibrancy of the neighborhood, while Councilwoman Jennifer Andress highlighted the need for action, stating, “Something is going to happen at that property.” The council also scheduled public hearings for the proposed Creekside development by Samford University, marking continued efforts to reinvigorate the local economy.
