Tuscaloosa hosts community meeting about proposed Sports Illustrated resort
Community Meeting Addresses Concerns Over Proposed Sports Illustrated Resort in Tuscaloosa
Tuscaloosa residents gathered for a community meeting hosted by District 3 City Councilor Norman Crow to voice their concerns regarding the proposed Sports Illustrated Resort. This is the second such meeting, prompted by feedback from an earlier session in fall, which led developers to revisit project plans.
Concerns raised by the community included traffic impact, the building’s height, and its overall aesthetics. Initially proposed at nine stories, the hotel height has been reduced to six stories in response to resident feedback. Crow noted that while the developers have attempted to address many concerns, the design concept remains a work in progress.
Among the attendees was Peggy Nasir, who expressed a desire to understand better the project’s implications and design. While some of her queries were addressed, she remains hesitant to support the project, citing unanswered questions about future phases and aesthetic issues.
The meeting was well-attended, with residents eager to engage with the development team about their plans and potential benefits to the community. Before construction can begin, the project will require approval from the Tuscaloosa City Council and the Planning and Zoning Commission, ensuring that community interests are adequately represented. The developers are encouraged to continue refining their plans in light of resident input as they finalize their approach.
