Alabama Rowing Coach Steps Down After Seven Successful Seasons
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Glenn Putyrae has announced his decision to step down as head coach of Alabama rowing after seven impactful seasons. Reflecting on his tenure, Putyrae expressed gratitude for the opportunity and emphasized the importance of being more present for his family. He highlighted the program’s significant achievements both on the water and in academics, noting the contributions of student-athletes and staff in laying a foundation for the future.
Putyrae joined Alabama in June 2018, following a prior coaching stint at Gonzaga. During his time with the Tide, he was named the 2019 Big 12 Coach of the Year, leading the team to its first NCAA Championship regatta appearance in 2021. His leadership helped the team secure multiple accolades, including three second-place finishes at the Big 12 Championships and a pair of top-three finishes in the following years. Notably, the program gained recognition in the Pocock CRCA Top 25 poll and celebrated 17 All-Big 12 honorees, along with its inaugural All-American.
Academically, under Putyrae, the team produced 31 Collegiate Rowing Association Scholar Athletes and two CSC Academic All-Americans. Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne commended Putyrae’s contributions, stating he has elevated the program and wishing him well in his future endeavors. A search for his successor will commence immediately.
