Austin and Jarrett Shine as Spring Garden Girls Triumph Over Oxford in Classic
In an electrifying matchup at the Larry & Connie Davidson Classic, the Spring Garden girls’ basketball team defeated Oxford 74-51, showcasing remarkable performances from key players. Senior Ace Austin led the charge with a game-high 29 points, complemented by Maggie Jarrett’s 17 and Avery Steward’s 11. The win highlighted the growing synergy among the team, which features a mostly new lineup surrounding Austin, who has been a cornerstone since her seventh-grade year.
Steward proved vital, sinking three pivotal three-pointers that pressured Oxford’s defense, creating space for Austin to exploit. “When they’re playing tight in, it helps to stretch the defense,” noted Austin, an Alabama signee eager to secure her fourth state championship. Jarrett’s significant contributions included eight rebounds and critical outside shooting, a role reminiscent of the graduated Libby Brown, who consistently threatened opponents with her perimeter play.
Despite Oxford’s efforts, led by Ava Thomas, who scored 15 points, the Yellow Jackets are still adjusting after the loss of their standout class. Coach Melissa Bennett expressed the need for better execution in their offensive sets as her team seeks to find its rhythm.
With this victory, Spring Garden continues to build momentum in the tournament, demonstrating the potential of its emerging roster while aiming for another state championship run. The next games in the classic promise more exciting action as teams vie for victory.
