Longtime Gadsden Mayor Sherman Guyton dies at 79
Remembering Sherman Guyton: A Legacy of Leadership in Gadsden
Sherman Guyton, who served as mayor of Gadsden from 2006 until 2022, passed away on June 21 at the age of 79. A lifelong resident of Gadsden, Guyton graduated from Emma Sansom High School in 1963 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Jacksonville State University, later delving into educational certifications and graduate work. He began his career at local businesses, including Philips Fruit Stand and Republic Steel, before becoming a well-respected teacher and coach.
Transitioning to real estate, Guyton operated Sherman Guyton Realty from 1977 until his mayoral term began. His impactful leadership saw the city through significant challenges, including the 2008 recession and the COVID-19 pandemic. He was instrumental in fostering capital investment to create jobs, as well as initiating projects such as The Venue at Coosa Landing and Riverwalk Park. He also played a key role in improving Noccalula Falls and establishing the Gadsden Sports Park at Gadsden State Community College.
Beyond his political contributions, Guyton was an avid fan of oldies music and worked to bring 1960s performers to Gadsden. His campaign for mayor was famously described as “running through Georgia,” highlighting his energetic approach. A visitation will be held at The Venue at Coosa Landing, followed by a Celebration of Life, honoring the lasting impact of his leadership on the Gadsden community.
