The Birmingham Youth Sports League: Registration and dates
Birmingham Launches Youth Sports League to Build Community and Character
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Mayor Randall Woodfin, alongside the Birmingham City Council, unveiled the Birmingham Youth Sports League (BYSL) Pilot Project during a press conference on Friday. “We are committed to investing in our youth,” Woodfin stated, emphasizing the league’s mission of fostering safe spaces that promote conflict resolution, mentorship, and essential life skills.
Rooted in the CEETA standard—character, excellence, equity, teamwork, and accountability—the BYSL aims to develop not just athletes, but also strong community members and leaders. Set to launch this summer, the league will initially offer football and cheerleading, with plans to expand to basketball, baseball, softball, and soccer.
The initiative aligns with Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett’s 8-point crime reduction plan, which includes the return of Police Athletic Teams (PAT) this spring. This approach seeks to strengthen relationships between youth and law enforcement, fostering trust and engagement as a strategy for long-term crime reduction.
Woodfin stressed the importance of encouraging children to step away from video games and engage in outdoor activities. The BYSL will operate under an advisory team to ensure equitable access to recreational opportunities for all children. For detailed information on the league and registration, residents are invited to watch the full press conference and access further resources.
