Man fighting for his life after shooting during alumni event
Man Critically Injured in Birmingham Shooting at Alumni Event
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A man is in critical condition following a shooting early Friday morning on 9th Street North, prompting an active search for the assailant by Birmingham Police. The incident reportedly began as an argument inside The Platinum of Birmingham during an alumni gathering for Jess Lanier and Bessemer City High Schools. The dispute escalated outside, resulting in gunfire.
This incident marks the second alumni event in recent weeks to be marred by violence, raising alarms within the community. Bessemer City Councilwoman Carla Jackson, a graduate of Jess Lanier, expressed disappointment that an otherwise festive occasion was overshadowed by the shooting. “We haven’t had any type of violence. Everyone is getting together, loving on one another,” she stated.
Jackson highlighted that these alumni events bring together graduates from 1973 to 2023, emphasizing efforts to create a safe atmosphere. Despite the recent shooting, she affirmed the group’s determination to continue the week’s activities, including a picnic scheduled for Saturday. “We know how to act in Bessemer and we are nonviolent,” she noted, underscoring the positive objectives of the reunions, such as supporting local football teams and providing scholarships.
Birmingham Police reassured the public that these gatherings are typically safe and remain committed to maintaining that tradition. They encourage anyone with information about the shooting to reach out to the authorities or Crime Stoppers.
