Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Welcomes Notable Athletes and Contributors
The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame has inducted several distinguished athletes and contributors, highlighting their remarkable achievements. Among these, Jason Dufner, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, made his mark in golf, starting as a walk-on at Auburn University. Dufner’s collegiate success included three wins and an Honorable Mention All-American title in 1997. He turned professional in 2001, gaining full membership on the PGA Tour by 2009. His crowning achievement came in 2013 when he claimed victory at the PGA Championship, contributing to a total of eight professional tournament wins.
In basketball, Mike Mitchell, born in Atlanta, Georgia, excelled at Auburn, becoming a four-time All-SEC selection and the school’s all-time leading rebounder. Drafted 15th overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1978, his career peaked with an All-Star selection in 1981 while playing predominantly for the San Antonio Spurs. Mitchell’s impressive 11-year NBA career ended with over 15,000 points and Auburn retiring his jersey in 2013.
In football, Frank Warren, a defensive lineman from Birmingham, Alabama, stood out at Auburn with three consecutive All-SEC titles. Drafted by the New Orleans Saints, he recorded 56 sacks over his 13-year career and was inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame in 2002.
Lastly, Buddy Davidson’s remarkable 50-year tenure in Auburn athletics culminated in a legacy of dedication, as he attended his 700th consecutive game in 2017. Davidson joins a prestigious list of Mel Allen Media Award recipients recognized for their contributions to the sports community.
