Huntsville attorney discusses new ‘Anti-American’ immigrant screening
New Immigration Policy Raises Concerns Over “Anti-American” Screening
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A recent policy announced by the White House mandates that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will screen immigrants for any affiliations or views deemed “anti-American.” As part of the process to obtain immigration benefits like green cards, officials will evaluate applicants for ties to “anti-American or terrorist organizations” and any documented antisemitic actions.
Huntsville immigration attorney Keith Cornett expressed skepticism regarding the vague language of the policy, which he believes may stem from recent protests. With nearly a thousand immigrant clients in his experience, Cornett noted that none had displayed what he considers anti-American views. He warned, however, that subjectivity in assessing applicants could present challenges.
Despite potential biases, Cornett praised the professionalism of USCIS officers in Alabama, particularly in the Montgomery office, stating he has never encountered unfair treatment during interviews. This screening process will also involve more extensive checks of social media activity, a measure that already has some existing protocols.
Cornett maintains confidence in the oversight system; he believes that any unjust decisions made by immigration officers can be reviewed by their supervisors. He noted that a strong focus on criminal history may influence these screening decisions as well. While USCIS has not specified when this policy will go into effect, Cornett remains optimistic that it will not disrupt processes significantly in Alabama.
