Alabama Football’s Punter Battle: Blake Doud Emerges as Top Contender
As Alabama football seeks a replacement for long-time punter James Burnip, who has moved on to the NFL, a competitive showdown is underway. True freshman Alex Asparuhov and Colorado School of Mines transfer Blake Doud have been vying for the starting punter spot. Although Asparuhov missed spring training due to an injury, he has been working hard during fall camp to make an impact. However, Doud appears to have distinguished himself after two scrimmages, according to special teams coordinator Kalen DeBoer.
Doud, a former RMAC Special Teams Player of the Year, bolstered his reputation at Colorado School of Mines, where he led Division II punters by averaging 46.6 yards per kick. His impressive statistics include 19 punts landing inside the 20-yard line and 13 exceeding 50 yards. DeBoer highlighted Doud’s significant improvement in practice while emphasizing Alabama’s rigorous training program for specialists.
Observations from the scrimmages suggest that Doud has maintained high performance levels, even under stadium pressure. DeBoer remarked on Doud’s upward trajectory, noting visible and statistical advancements over the past two weeks. As Alabama prepares for its season opener against Florida State on August 30, the team may have found its punting solution in Doud, setting the stage for a promising season ahead.
