Alabama Fossil Fest Highlights Crocodilians in Tuscaloosa
The University of Alabama’s Museum of Natural History will host the 13th annual Alabama Fossil Fest on September 20 from 1 to 4:30 p.m., focusing this year on crocodilians. This free, family-friendly event promises hands-on learning and exploration of 500 million years of Alabama’s prehistoric past. Visitors can look forward to the unveiling of a new exhibit and informative talks from paleontology experts.
Adiel Klompmaker, the museum’s Curator of Paleontology, emphasized the event’s diversity, appealing to enthusiasts of biology, geology, and paleontology. The museum houses an extensive collection of fossils from the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras, which will be highlighted throughout the festival.
Attendees can engage with displays from local paleontological societies, including the Birmingham Paleontological Society and the Alabama Paleontological Society. There will be educational programming and interactive opportunities for learners of all ages, ensuring that everyone leaves with a greater appreciation for paleontology.
Originally recognized as National Fossil Day, the museum has rebranded the event to Alabama Fossil Fest, enriching its offerings to include presentations and hands-on fossil interactions.
