Alabamians rally against Trump administration in “No Kings” protests
Thousands Rally Across Alabama for “No Kings” Protests Against Trump Administration
On Saturday, Alabama witnessed its second round of “No Kings” protests, uniting thousands in opposition to the policies and rhetoric of the Trump administration. Organized by the grassroots 50501 Movement, events took place in 15 cities with over 2,700 demonstrations nationwide scheduled for October 18. Following earlier protests in June, attendees voiced concerns about authoritarian tendencies, cuts to medical research funding, and the impacts on the Affordable Care Act.
Costumed demonstrators added a festive touch, inspired by viral protest imagery. Huntsville’s gathering focused on healthcare issues, criticizing U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his anti-science rhetoric. Organizer Amy Price highlighted the engagement of the medical community, rallying in defense of research amid governmental cuts.
Birmingham’s event featured speeches from local leaders, including former Senator Doug Jones, who condemned the oppressive language from Trump and other GOP figures. Emphasizing the fragility of freedom, Jones underscored the importance of defending democratic values.
In Montgomery, Reverend Valtoria Jackson and Alabama Democratic Party Vice Chair Tabitha Isner inspired a crowd of over 600, urging continued activism. Additional events statewide remained peaceful, although isolated incidents occurred. Nationwide, organizers reported nearly 7 million participants, with a virtual follow-up planned on October 21 to discuss future actions in the movement.
