Huntsville’s new $7.7 million rec center almost ‘ready to rock and roll’
West Huntsville Recreation Center Set to Open Soon
The West Huntsville Recreation Center is on track to open within weeks, as confirmed by Huntsville City Council during their recent meeting. The $7.7 million facility, located at 150 Martin Road, just west of Zierdt Road, has completed significant construction milestones. General Services Director Ricky Wilkinson announced that all equipment installation is finished, and the flooring is sealed, pending a five-day curing period. A final inspection is scheduled for next week, with furniture moving set to begin shortly thereafter.
Spanning 27,350 square feet, the one-story center draws design inspiration from the popular Mark Russell Recreation Center. It features a gymnasium with two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, and three indoor pickleball courts, alongside four exterior pickleball courts. The center’s completion comes after a year of construction and is seen as a vital addition to District 5, as highlighted by City Councilman John Meredith, who emphasized the area’s need for recreational resources.
With this new facility, the city will increase its number of recreational centers to 15, enhancing the community’s access to leisure and activity spaces alongside its more than 65 public parks. Notably, the Park at Hays Farm, Huntsville’s latest public park, was also opened recently, furthering the city’s commitment to expanding recreational opportunities for its residents.
