31 Days of Good News: Northport celebrates magical Dickens-inspired Christmas event
Experience a Victorian Christmas at Dickens Downtown
Tonight, Northport will transform into a Victorian wonderland for Dickens Downtown, an enchanting holiday event starting at 5 p.m. The festivities kick off with a vibrant procession featuring characters from Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” Queen Victoria and Father Christmas will make a grand entrance, arriving in a horse-drawn carriage along Main Avenue.
Following the procession, attendees will gather for a tree-lighting ceremony at Historic Shirley Place at 5:30 p.m. The event encourages visitors to don their own Victorian attire, with opportunities for free horse-drawn carriage and train rides. Families can enjoy hot chocolate, cookies, and admire fresh cut decorative fir trees at Northport Baptist Church’s main sanctuary lobby.
The event will include model trains, a nativity scene, and Christmas carols performed by the cast of Theatre Tuscaloosa. Tours of Historic Shirley Place will also be available, led by the Historic Tuscaloosa Cameo Guild. Father Christmas and Queen Victoria will be on hand for photographs, creating memorable moments for all attendees.
With music, food vendors, and local merchants adding to the festive atmosphere, Dickens Downtown is set to run until 8:30 p.m. This holiday celebration isn’t exclusive to Northport; nearby Wetumpka and Tuscumbia will host their own Dickens-themed events in the coming weeks, ensuring the spirit of Victorian Christmas spreads throughout Alabama.
