ITA Set to Launch New Division II Singles and Doubles National Championships Next Fall in Tuscaloosa, Alabama
ITA Launches Standalone Division II Individual Championships
Tempe, AZ – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has announced the introduction of a standalone Division II Individual Championship, set to replace the ITA Cup for the fall season. This initiative will provide student-athletes more opportunities to compete for national titles in a division that currently lacks NCAA-sponsored singles and doubles championships.
David Mullins, ITA CEO, emphasized the importance of this event, responding to calls from Division II coaches for enhanced championship opportunities. The inaugural tournament will take place at the newly renovated Tuscaloosa Tennis Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, thanks to a partnership with Visit Tuscaloosa. This facility will host the championships for three years—2026, 2027, and 2028—offering a world-class experience for competitors.
Robins Bonner from Visit Tuscaloosa expressed excitement about showcasing the community’s hospitality and tennis infrastructure through this event. All athletes will be guaranteed a minimum of three matches, with ITA Division II Regional Champions and Finalists earning direct entry into the tournament. Additional at-large bids will be determined based on criteria set by the ITA Operating Committee.
While the ITA Cup remains the fall national championship for Division III, NAIA, and Junior College levels, this new championship aims to elevate the competitive landscape for Division II student-athletes. More details about the 2026 ITA Division II Individual National Championships are expected to be released soon.
