Central Alabama faced significant challenges this weekend as heavy rain and storms led to flash flooding, impassable roads, and emergency rescues. On Saturday, a series of downpours prompted the National Weather Service to issue multiple warnings across the region, with flash flood watches extending through the evening. Major cities affected included Jefferson County, where reports of downed trees, flooded roadways, and several water rescues emerged.
Cedar Bluff in Cherokee County experienced residential flooding, while Jefferson County witnessed hazardous conditions, including vehicles stranded in high water and road closures due to flooding on critical streets. The situation was dire enough that city officials in Birmingham deployed barricades to keep motorists safe.
Accidents resulting from hydroplaning were also reported, including two on Interstate 65 that led to minor injuries. The intense weather caused rivers in the area, like Valley Creek, to swell dramatically, showcasing the rapid impact of the heavy rain.
Meteorologists predicted that while the severe storms would begin to clear by 10 AM on Sunday, the threat of flooding would continue due to the significant rainfall accumulation in previous days.
