Sporting events coming to Birmingham in 2026
Birmingham: A Thriving Hub for Major Sporting Events
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham is rapidly establishing itself as a prime location for major sporting events, thanks to its successful hosting of the NCAA basketball tournaments and the World Police and Fire Games. Exciting plans are afoot to attract even more high-profile events in the near future. A highlight for the 2026 sports calendar is the American Conference basketball tournaments scheduled for March 11-15, featuring both men’s and women’s competitions at Legacy Arena.
Preston Kirk, Vice President of Events at Knight Eady, expressed enthusiasm about the UAB fans’ involvement, anticipating a packed arena to cheer for their team. Although Birmingham isn’t hosting NCAA tournaments this year following a successful women’s regional in 2025, the men’s tournament is set to return in 2028, with preparations underway for bids stretching into 2029-2031.
Additionally, Knight Eady recently organized “Ballin in Boutwell,” a series of college basketball preseason games that captured the community’s attention last October. Kirk hinted at the potential for expanding future events given their popularity. The sports scene continues with the Children’s of Alabama Indy Grand Prix on March 29 and the Regions Tradition golf tournament in late April.
As the Birmingham Stallions return under new head coach AJ McCarron this spring, anticipation builds for what lies ahead in this vibrant sports city. The UFL has yet to release its new season schedule, keeping fans eager for updates.
