Storms Sunday, Then Flash Freeze and Dangerous Cold for Central Alabama
Central Alabama Faces Severe Weather Transition from Rain to Flash Freeze
Residents of Central Alabama should brace for a significant weather shift starting Sunday morning through Monday, as forecasters anticipate heavy rain, potential severe storms, followed by a flash freeze and dangerously low temperatures. Counties impacted include Bibb, Blount, Jefferson, and many others across the region.
On Sunday morning, widespread rain will continue, particularly in northern areas where a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect due to freezing rain. As temperatures rise later, the precipitation is expected to turn into rain, offering temporary respite for travelers.
However, Sunday afternoon brings a heightened risk of severe storms, particularly for counties south of I-20. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 2 out of 5 “Slight Risk” warning, with threats of damaging winds and isolated tornadoes associated with fast-moving storms expected to clear by mid-afternoon.
As night falls, temperatures will plummet, increasing the threat of a flash freeze and black ice due to residual water from the rain. This is particularly concerning for roads in several counties, creating hazardous conditions for Monday morning commutes.
A Cold Weather Advisory has been issued from Sunday night through Monday, with low temperatures expected between 0 to 20 degrees and wind chills potentially hitting below zero. Residents are urged to limit travel, dress warmly, and take precautions to protect vulnerable pipes and pets. Stay updated through local weather apps and media as conditions evolve.
