Council honors Gadsden Pumas, details 13 community Thanksgiving sites and holiday events
Gadsden City Council Celebrates Soccer Champions and Thanksgiving Efforts
During its Nov. 25 meeting, the Gadsden City Council honored the undefeated Gadsden Pumas 12U soccer team for their state championship victory, inviting both coaches and players to share their experiences and take part in a commemorative photo session. Mayor Buster Porch then provided an overview of the city’s Thanksgiving initiatives, announcing that 13 meal sites will be operational this holiday season. Last year, volunteers successfully served nearly 11,000 meals in one day, showcasing the community’s commitment to support those in need. Among the designated locations are Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church and Freedom Center, each offering meals at different times.
In addition to community outreach, Craig Scott, director of the Gadsden Public Library, introduced intern Madeline Peavy from Jacksonville State University’s School of Social Work, who will assist patrons with social-service needs. Council members expressed gratitude towards local volunteers and faith organizations for their involvement in meal preparations and urged residents to utilize the 2-1-1 referral line for service inquiries.
Looking ahead, the council also highlighted upcoming holiday events, including the Gadsden Christmas parade set for Dec. 5 and a tree lighting ceremony at Riverside Park at 6:30 p.m. The council reaffirmed their appreciation for the collective effort of volunteers and community partners as they prepare for both Thanksgiving festivities and the holiday season ahead.
