University of Alabama Welcomes Richard Owens as Tight Ends Coach
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Kalen DeBoer, head coach of the University of Alabama football team, announced the hiring of Richard Owens as the new tight ends coach on Monday morning. DeBoer expressed confidence in Owens’ extensive background, highlighting his diverse skillset cultivated over 16 seasons as both a player and coach. Owens’ familiarity with the Southeast Region and the coaching staff made him the ideal candidate to enhance the team’s offensive performance.
Owens, a Louisville alumnus, arrives at Alabama following a successful three-year tenure coaching the offensive line at his alma mater, where the Cardinals boasted a 28-12 record and secured consecutive bowl victories in 2024 and 2025. During his tenure, the offensive line produced nine All-ACC selections, including Bryan Hudson, recognized as the top offensive lineman in 2023.
Before his time at Louisville, Owens served as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator at Georgia Southern, with previous positions at UAB, where he led an offensive line that played a crucial role in the Blazers’ nine-win season and C-USA West Division title in 2020.
A former tight end with the Cardinals, Owens also has experience in the NFL, having played for the Minnesota Vikings, St. Louis Rams, and New York Jets. He is married with one daughter and is eager to contribute to Alabama’s legacy of excellence. The formal financial terms of his appointment are subject to approval by the Board of Trustees.
