Oxford Dominates Alexandria for Calhoun County Baseball Title
In a decisive performance on March 4, Oxford High School clinched the Calhoun County baseball championship, overcoming Alexandria with a commanding 12-2 victory at Choccolocco Park. The Yellow Jackets, under head coach Travis Janssen, showcased their offensive might, with standout James Tapley earning MVP honors after a 3-for-4 performance that included two RBIs and the game-ending hit that scored Hudson Gilman.
Despite a promising start for Alexandria, which led 2-0 following Jacob Cunningham’s strong batting, it was Oxford’s explosive response that shifted the game’s momentum. The Yellow Jackets leveled the score in the first inning and then pulled ahead decisively in the second and fourth innings, tallying a combined seven runs. Tapley, alongside teammates Rocco and Reid Maniscalco, delivered critical hits, supporting an effective pitching effort that allowed only three hits during the game.
Oxford’s offensive strategy thrived on exploiting Alexandria’s defensive errors, with the latter’s inexperience—having graduated 15 seniors last year—coming into play. Alexandria coach Zac Welch noted the team’s tight gameplay contributed to the loss, indicating a need for improvement in fundamentals.
With this victory, Oxford solidifies its position within the county, reflecting significant progress and teamwork as the players, particularly Tapley, gain invaluable tournament experience. The Yellow Jackets wrapped up the tournament with an impressive overall performance, demonstrating readiness for upcoming competitive challenges.
