AHSAA Basketball State Championships Drive Millions into Birmingham’s Economy
The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) is hosting its 105th state basketball championships at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, attracting 56 teams eager to compete for the coveted title. This prestigious tournament is not only a highlight on the sports calendar but also a significant economic boon for the Birmingham metropolitan area, generating over $4.3 million in direct economic impact in 2024. The Greater Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau (GBCVB) anticipates similar results for 2025.
AHSAA Executive Director Heath Harmon emphasized the championships’ high quality and the economic benefits for Birmingham. Since its inception in 1921 at the Birmingham YMCA, the AHSAA has transformed its tournament format, which now features simultaneous boys’ and girls’ championship games—a revolutionary approach that has inspired similar practices across other states.
This week’s event draws coaches, players, and fans from all over Alabama, boosting local hospitality and dining sectors. The proximity of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame within the BJCC Complex further enriches the experience, offering visitors additional entertainment options.
Scott Myers, ASHOF Executive Director, noted that the AHSAA championships are a must-see for local sports fans, underscoring the tournament’s impact on the economy. Fans can catch all the action through live streams and broadcasts on platforms like the NFHS Network and Alabama Public Television, ensuring statewide access to this iconic event.
