Alabama Bird Search registration now open
Registration Opens for Alabama Bird Search – Youth Challenge and Art Contest
The second annual Alabama Bird Search – Youth Challenge (ABS) is now open for registration, inviting youth teams from prekindergarten to high school to participate in a 24-hour birding competition. Set for April 18-27, 2025, teams will compete within age divisions to identify the most bird species, with prizes and recognition awarded. Additionally, a T-shirt art contest is included, with the winning artwork featured on next year’s event shirt. The competition will culminate in an awards ceremony at Turkey Creek Nature Preserve on April 27, 2025.
ABS collaborates with several organizations, including Alabama Audubon and the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind, to enhance accessibility and inclusivity in birding. Teams are encouraged to register by April 1 and submit artwork by March 21, 2025. Last year’s inaugural challenge saw 64 participants from 17 teams, with the winning team identifying 171 species, setting a Big Day record.
The ABS aims to dispel myths associated with birding, welcoming participants of all skill levels. Volunteer mentors are available for beginner teams, while a special “AnyBody Can Bird” prize will recognize efforts to include diverse participants, such as those who may not have traditional resources. Inspired by Georgia’s successful Youth Birding Competition, the ABS Youth Challenge hopes to engage Alabama’s youth in birding and conservation, fostering a passion for the natural world.
