Alabama Honors 50 Years of Women’s Athletics with Weekend-Long Celebration
University of Alabama Celebrates 50 Years of Women’s Varsity Athletics
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama’s athletics department marked a significant milestone with the 50th anniversary of women’s varsity athletics on April 25-26, 2025. This celebration brought together approximately 130 former student-athletes, coaches, and staff who have shaped the legacy of women’s sports at the university.
The weekend kicked off with a welcome reception, followed by an opportunity for attendees to enjoy Alabama softball and baseball games. Saturday’s activities included a campus tour, showcasing key athletic facilities like the Bill Battle Sports Science Center and Weight Room. A Tailgate Celebration highlighted the day, featuring a panel discussion and a meet-and-greet with former athletes. The weekend culminated with on-field recognition following a softball game, celebrating the contributions of trailblazing women in sports.
Alabama’s director of athletics, Greg Byrne, expressed pride in the achievements of women’s athletics, noting their vital role in strengthening the department. “It’s exciting to be at a place like The University of Alabama during a time when we are celebrating 50 years of women’s varsity athletics,” he stated.
