Alabama officials praise decision to locate Space Command HQ in Huntsville
Huntsville Selected as Permanent HQ for U.S. Space Command
In a decision celebrated by Alabama leaders, the Trump Administration has designated Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville as the permanent headquarters for U.S. Space Command. This strategic move is expected to transition around 1,400 jobs to Huntsville over the next five years. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey praised the decision, asserting there’s “no better place” for Space Command HQ, and applauded local officials and the congressional delegation for their dedication in securing this critical military hub.
Mayor Tommy Battle emphasized that the decision ensures the U.S. is prepared to tackle emerging space challenges, highlighting Huntsville’s skilled workforce and robust infrastructure. The area has a long history of supporting national defense, home to facilities like Redstone Arsenal, which has led the development of missile and rocket programs for over 50 years, and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.
Huntsville had previously been named the preferred location for Space Command in early 2021, but the decision was later reversed under President Biden. Despite that setback, the recent announcement reaffirms Huntsville’s strategic significance in the aerospace sector, with a reputation for housing top STEM talent and aerospace engineers.
Ellen McNair, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce, called the selection a “landmark moment” for the state, reflecting Alabama’s leadership in aerospace and innovation. As Huntsville prepares for this new chapter, it aims to support the mission of U.S. Space Command effectively.
