Alabama teen robbery suspect shot dead by SBI agent during Montgomery traffic stop
Fatal Shooting of Robbery Suspect by State Agent in Montgomery
In a dramatic turn of events today, a 19-year-old robbery suspect, identified as Raymond Tellis Jr. of Montgomery, was fatally shot by a State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) agent. The incident unfolded around 9:20 a.m. when local police responded to an armed robbery on Herron Street. The victim, who remains unnamed, was transported to a local hospital for treatment after being shot during the robbery.
Following the incident, the Montgomery police issued a bulletin for the stolen vehicle used by Tellis to flee the scene. Shortly thereafter, an SBI agent, who was assisting the Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit, located the vehicle on Upper Wetumpka Road and initiated a traffic stop.
As the agent attempted to arrest Tellis, he reportedly resisted and brandished a firearm. In response, the agent discharged his weapon, resulting in Tellis’s death. Fortunately, no officers were injured during the altercation.
To ensure objectivity, SBI agents not routinely assigned to the Montgomery area have been called in to investigate the shooting. Upon completion of their inquiry, the findings will be submitted to the Alabama Attorney General’s Office for further review. This incident raises significant questions about law enforcement procedures and community safety in the area.
