American Legion Auxiliary Alabama Girls State returns to Tuscaloosa with record-breaking delegation
Alabama Girls State Welcomes Record Delegation for 83rd Session
The 83rd session of the American Legion Auxiliary Alabama Girls State is set to take place from June 1-6 at The University of Alabama, marking a significant milestone with over 400 rising high school seniors participating, the largest delegation in the program’s history. This week-long initiative offers an immersive introduction to government and civic engagement, featuring activities such as drafting and debating legislation, participating in political party caucuses, and running for office.
Notable speakers for this session include Governor Kay Ivey and U.S. Senator Katie Britt, both proud alumnae of Alabama Girls State. Britt, who served as Girls State Governor in 1999, and Ivey, who held the role of Lieutenant Governor during her tenure as a delegate, will share their experiences and insights.
The program culminates in a visit to Montgomery where delegates will tour key government sites, including the State Capitol and Governor’s Mansion, while also engaging in legislative sessions at the Alabama State House.
Select sessions will be open to media, held at the Moody Music Building Concert Hall, featuring prominent speakers throughout the week, including Mecca Musick and Yeonmi Park. The Alabama Girls State program is renowned for fostering leadership and civic responsibility among young women, continuing its legacy as a premier youth initiative in the state.
