Armstrong Leads Gadsden Invitational with Solid Opening Round
GADSDEN — Luke Armstrong of Gadsden faced a rollercoaster journey in golf but emerged triumphantly during the opening round of the Gadsden Invitational, shooting a 5-under-par 66. He is joined at the top by Ty Cole and Andrew Gladden, each also recording the same score. This puts them one stroke ahead of Brennan Clay heading into Saturday’s second round of the three-day tournament, part of the 2025 Calhoun County Golf Tour.
Armstrong, who recently struggled at the Gadsden Country Club championship, expressed his mixed emotions about golf, stating, “It’s not fun playing bad.” After his previous performance, he sought advice and practiced with Cole, which helped him regain confidence. His stellar round included an eagle on the par-4 ninth hole, finishing the front nine in an impressive 32 strokes.
Ken Goforth trailed slightly with a score of 68, followed by Jacob LeCroy and Dane Moore at 70. Current Tour points leader Gary Wigington, alongside two-time defending champion Chris Hummel, struggled, both finishing at par with a 71 and 79, respectively.
Armstrong, a former baseball player, now balances his golf pursuits with family commitments, notably coaching his young son, Evan. Reflecting on a special moment with his son playing in his first tournament, he said, “That was probably one of the most fun moments I’ve had yet as a dad.” As the Invitational progresses, Armstrong aims to maintain his momentum and secure a top finish.
