Avondale church working to buy part of long vacant Birmingham hospital campus
Avondale’s Redeemer Community Church has announced its plans to acquire a portion of the former Trinity Medical Center campus to expand its sanctuary. The church has been under contract for the property for nearly a year, although specific financial details and the exact area involved in the acquisition remain undisclosed. The site, located on Montclair Road and 1.5 miles from the church’s current sanctuary on Fourth Avenue South, was vacated when Trinity Medical Center moved to Grandview Medical Center in 2015.
Efforts to redevelop the Trinity property have faced challenges in the past, with previous plans halted in 2018 and another proposed during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Redeemer Church stated that significant renovations will be needed to adapt the site for its purposes, which aligns with the church’s long-standing goal of expanding its campus first explored in 2018. Previous strategies, including adding seating to the current sanctuary or constructing a new one on existing property, were deemed too costly and complicated.
The leadership emphasized that the Trinity site offers a compelling solution due to its size, favorable location, and accessibility, especially since most church members live within a five-mile radius. A prayer gathering is scheduled at the site to further engage the community in this initiative.
