Birmingham police bringing back familiar program, hoping to make a lasting impact on the city’s youth
Birmingham’s Police Athletic and Activity Team Makes a Comeback with New Focus on Mentorship
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — After an eight-year hiatus, the Police Athletic and Activity Team (PAT) is returning to Birmingham with a revamped mission that goes beyond sports. The program aims to foster mentorship and community engagement, in addition to promoting athletics.
Officer Paul Campbell shared a personal connection to the program, noting that a coach inspired him to pursue a career in law enforcement. He emphasized the importance of mentorship, drawing from his own experiences under Detective Victor Langford, who aims to connect with youth by discussing their interests and concerns.
Interim Police Chief Michael Pickett highlighted that the revitalization of PAT is part of a larger initiative to strengthen community relationships with law enforcement. The program seeks to instill mutual respect through both athletic training and broader activities. "We’re changing it to activities. Athletics and activities," said an official, indicating a shift towards mentorship opportunities that resemble a "big brothers and police" dynamic.
The program’s launch includes a baseball game at Cooper Green Park this Saturday, marking the beginning of a series of events aimed at inspiring youth to consider careers in law enforcement. Organizers hope to attract more local talent to the police force, encouraging young participants to envision themselves as future officers. Parents interested in enrolling their children can register at Legion Field during the week.
