Jacksonville Girls and Oxford Boys Earn Top Seeds in Calhoun County Basketball Tournament
The stage is set for the 75th annual Calhoun County basketball tournament, with Jacksonville’s girls and Oxford’s boys earning the top seeds, as unanimously voted by county coaches. The tournament will be held at Pete Mathews Coliseum from January 26 to January 31.
Jacksonville’s girls, boasting a strong record of 17-3, have proven their dominance in county matchups, remaining undefeated at 7-0 and even defeating four-time defending champions Oxford this season. Their coach, Corey Mize, expressed pride in their top seed but emphasized the unpredictability of the tournament, stating the team must stay focused and ready.
On the boys’ side, Oxford, with a record of 16-4 and ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, stands out as a tough contender, even though they have yet to face county competition this season. Coach Joel Van Meter acknowledged the significance of the county tournament for local communities, stressing the need for disciplined play to secure success.
The tournament’s structure includes byes for the top four seeds, comprising Jacksonville, Oxford, Anniston, and Alexandria. Game pairings include matchups for the girls’ and boys’ brackets, culminating in championship games scheduled for January 31.
