Oxford Leads Seedings for 2025 Calhoun County Basketball Tournament
The 2025 Calhoun County basketball tournament is set to kick off, with Oxford’s boys and girls taking the top seeds. The tournament, which runs from January 17 to January 28, will take place at Jacksonville State University’s Pete Mathews Coliseum, with a break in the schedule from January 21 to January 25.
Oxford’s boys (14-5) enter the tournament ranked fourth in Class 6A, aiming to reclaim their title after finishing as runners-up last year. Coach Joel Van Meter is optimistic, noting that despite the challenge of any tournament, his team is improving daily. This season, they dominate their competition, recently defeating Jacksonville 80-48.
On the girls’ side, Oxford (11-8) seeks to extend its reign following three consecutive titles. With notable players like Shay Montgomery and Ava Thomas returning, they look to build on their past successes. Coach Melissa Bennett expresses pride in her team’s growth and resilience following tough losses.
Seedings for the boys include Alexandria as the second seed, followed by Anniston and Piedmont, while Jacksonville girls secured the second seed, with Anniston and Saks rounding out the top four. The tournament promises competitive matchups, starting with early pairings such as Saks against Faith Christian and Ohatchee against Pleasant Valley.
As anticipation builds, both Oxford teams aim to solidify their legacies in Calhoun County basketball.
