Tuscaloosa to Commemorate 61st Anniversary of Bloody Tuesday
TUSCALOOSA, AL — Tuscaloosa will commemorate the 61st anniversary of the Bloody Tuesday event on June 8 at the First African Baptist Church. The observance will commence at 3 p.m. and feature music and videos reflecting the historical protests of June 9, 1964. This date marks the tragic “Bloody Tuesday” when hundreds of Black demonstrators were violently confronted by local police and deputized citizens for challenging segregation at the newly constructed Tuscaloosa County Courthouse.
Attendees can expect a powerful performance from a choir comprising over 35 voices, reminiscent of the historic T. Y. Rogers Memorial Choir, who will sing traditional freedom songs. The event will also feature notable guest speakers, including Rev. David E. Gay, Jr. of Beulah Baptist Church, and University of Alabama professor John Giggie, who recently authored “Bloody Tuesday: The Struggle for Civil Rights in Tuscaloosa.” Rev. Dr. Vernon Swift of Elizabeth Baptist Church will also share remarks.
This annual event serves as a vital remembrance of the struggles faced during the Civil Rights Movement and aims to foster reflection and dialogue about the ongoing quest for equality. The First African Baptist Church is located at 2621 Stillman Boulevard in Tuscaloosa. Those interested in news updates can subscribe to the local newsletter for free.
