Former Birmingham city official takes job in Florida: ‘We’re bringing hope’
Josh Carpenter, a seasoned leader in innovation and economic development, has taken on a pivotal role at Speros, a Florida-based cancer research organization. He has been appointed as the president of Speros and vice president and chief integration officer for the Moffitt Cancer Center, marking a new chapter in his career following his tenure at Southern Research, where he served as president since 2021. Carpenter is also recognized for his role as director of innovation and economic opportunity for the city of Birmingham, where he spearheaded initiatives in workforce development and COVID-19 recovery.
In his new role, Carpenter is set to combine the clinical and research expertise of Speros and Moffitt with commercial partners to accelerate advancements in cancer prevention and treatment. Marty Lanahan, chair of Speros’ Board of Directors, has commended Carpenter for his capability in launching large initiatives and fostering strategic partnerships. Carpenter’s vision reflects a commitment to uniting science, technology, and medicine to enhance public health.
He emphasizes that Speros, a word rooted in Latin meaning “to hope,” aims to instill hope in cancer patients, researchers on the brink of discoveries requiring industry collaboration, and physicians aiming to integrate innovation into their practice.
