Former members of Alabama basketball program on witness list for capital murder
Jury Selection Underway in Michael Davis Trial for Jamea Harris Shooting
Jury selection began on Monday for Michael Davis, accused in the fatal shooting of Jamea Harris in Tuscaloosa in 2023. The case has gained national attention due to claims that former Alabama basketball player Darius Miles provided the murder weapon, and testimony suggesting NBA lottery pick Brandon Miller transported the gun without knowing it was in his vehicle.
Court reports indicate that the incident started when Harris was leaving a bar with her boyfriend, Cedric Johnson, leading to a confrontation. Davis allegedly returned to the scene, where gunfire erupted, with investigators stating he fired the first shot that struck Harris fatally.
Davis, facing a single capital murder charge, is not candidates for the death penalty, as announced by prosecutors. His attorney argues that Davis acted in self-defense, highlighting that Johnson displayed a firearm first. Davis himself was injured during the exchange.
Harris’s family is passionately pursuing justice, emphasizing the profound impact of her loss on her son and family. “This wasn’t random — she had a son who depended on her,” stated her stepfather, Kelvin Heard. Meanwhile, Darius Miles is also facing charges in the case but will be tried separately. The prosecution asserts they have substantial evidence to support their case. WVTM 13 is providing ongoing coverage of the trial.
