Gadsden city leaders allocate funds to aid families amid SNAP suspension
Gadsden City Leaders Respond to SNAP Benefit Suspension
In response to the suspension of SNAP benefits amid the ongoing federal shutdown, Gadsden city leaders are taking vital steps to support local families facing food insecurity. The city council has approved a plan to allocate discretionary funds from the mayor and council to assist those in need, partnering with the Etowah County Food Bank to ensure swift distribution of resources.
Michael Rodgers, public affairs coordinator for Gadsden, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “The goal for this is to partner with the Etowah County Food Bank to help provide food for people who need it during a time when federal assistance may be slow incoming or may not come at all.”
The Etowah Community Food Bank has reported a significant rise in demand, with requests for assistance increasing by 40%. To meet this urgent need, the food bank has requested $15,000. It sources supplies from the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama and is ready to expand its distribution efforts.
“This time of year is particularly challenging,” Rodgers noted, highlighting the double burden families face as November ushers in the holiday season. Residents of Etowah County in need of assistance can call 2-1-1 for information on food pickup locations and times, ensuring that help is accessible to those struggling during this critical period.
