Gadsden State, Anniston Munitions Center provides no-cost CDL training for Alabama workers
Gadsden State and Anniston Munitions Center Empower Alabama Workers through CDL Training Program
Gadsden State Community College (GSCC) is collaborating with the Anniston Munitions Center to enhance workforce training opportunities for Alabama employees. Under the Skills for Success Innovation Program, workers at the munitions center have gained valuable certifications, including Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A and Hazardous Materials Entry-Level Driver Training, all at no cost to them or their employer. This initiative aims to meet workforce needs in Alabama’s logistics and defense sectors.
Recently, the center honored Darrell Horton for his leadership in the program, which has successfully enabled five employees to achieve their CDL licenses, bolstering the organization’s operational capacity. The center had previously recognized GSCC’s Shayondra Griffin for her support of this initiative.
According to Alan Smith, president of GSCC, the partnership exemplifies efforts to eliminate financial barriers hindering career advancement for workers. With backing from the Alabama Community College System Innovation Center, the program aligns with statewide workforce development goals by providing industry-recognized training.
Lt. Col. Steve Wallace, commander of the Anniston Munitions Center, emphasized the initiative’s importance in enhancing mission readiness, stating that the no-cost training positively impacts operational safety and employee careers. Growing interest in the program, driven by referrals, suggests a promising future for further enrollments in training classes, especially following recent federal changes that have increased certification costs nationally.
