Alabama Set for Major Airline Expansions in 2026
As 2026 approaches, Alabama’s aviation landscape is gearing up for transformative changes with significant airline expansions, aiming to enhance travel options and boost the state’s tourism and economy. Gulf Shores will emerge as a pivotal seasonal hub for Allegiant Air, launching new routes starting May 21 that increase direct flights to 13 destinations, including popular cities like Nashville and Oklahoma City.
Huntsville’s travel scene is also brightening, with Allegiant Air introducing enhanced Florida-bound flights and the state’s inaugural intrastate connection to the coast. The twice-weekly service to Sanford International Airport kicks off on February 12, followed by additional flights to St. Pete–Clearwater starting March 5.
Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines will expand operations from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, adding frequencies to key destinations including Denver and Orlando in April 2026. This expansion reflects a growing demand for air travel, offering greater flexibility for both business and leisure travelers.
A historic transition is underway in Mobile, as the new Mobile International Airport (BFM) prepares to open by November 2026, relocating from Mobile Regional Airport. This upgrade promises modern facilities and better connectivity, with major airlines like Delta and American committing to the new terminal.
Overall, these expansions underscore Alabama’s growing significance as a travel hub, enhancing accessibility to both domestic and international destinations and positioning the state for increased economic growth and tourism.
