Historic Huntsville football field becoming modern $10 million park for flag football, pickleball
Goldsmith-Schiffman Park Revamp Honors Historic Roots
The Huntsville Planning Commission has greenlighted significant renovations to Goldsmith-Schiffman Park, emphasizing its high school football legacy. Forsite Group, tasked with the redesign, confirmed that the historic nine-foot granite wall from the 1934 stadium will remain on the park’s western side, with additional segments preserved at key intersections. However, much of the wall will be replaced by a black vinyl chain-link fence for enhanced security and visibility, despite some commission members advocating for a more aesthetically pleasing solution.
Due to FEMA regulations, the city cannot keep the stone wall intact in areas prone to flooding. Alternative options were discussed, and the chain-link fence was deemed the most cost-effective choice. Elements of the original wall will be integrated into the park design, which will retain its historic entrances and signage.
The upgraded park will feature two turf flag football fields, pickleball courts, walking paths, a children’s play area, and a new restroom pavilion raised two feet above the flood zone. An elevated plaza will provide views of the sports fields while offering sitting areas and various amenities.
Planning for this transformation reflects an investment of $8 to $10 million from the city’s capital improvement fund, with construction slated to begin next year and expected to last 15 months. Community feedback has been largely positive, demonstrating public engagement in preserving local heritage while enhancing recreational spaces.
