Homewood Appoints Cale Smith as Interim City Manager
The city of Homewood has named Cale Smith as its interim city manager following his tenure as the director of engineering and zoning. Appointed on November 3, Smith will oversee the daily operations of city government and manage the city’s budget, aiming to enhance community engagement and decision-making processes.
Smith emphasized the importance of listening to the community, stating, “At the end of the day, people want to be heard and they want to participate.” His immediate goals include reviewing the budget for fiscal responsibility and facilitating the creation of a comprehensive master plan, with public input set to begin in January.
The recent city council restructuring—reducing its members from 11 to four—aims to increase efficiency, a transition Smith will support in preparation for a permanent city manager. He has proactively engaged with other municipalities with a similar governance model and visited various city departments to streamline operations.
Additionally, Smith plans to conduct a community survey to align city priorities with residents’ needs, affirming his commitment to making informed, collaborative decisions.
With a professional background in civil engineering and extensive project management experience, Smith is eager to foster growth within Homewood. Mayor Jennifer Andress expressed her confidence in Smith’s leadership, recognizing his dedication to improving the city and serving its residents.
