Rocket City Curling Club Grows in Popularity Ahead of 2026 Winter Olympics
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Rocket City Curling Club, one of the largest in the U.S., currently boasts over 150 members, with a surge anticipated following the 2026 Winter Olympics. Club President Matthew Smith notes that curling is gaining traction as a popular winter sport, particularly during Olympic years. Despite its seemingly simple appearance on screen, curling is challenging. “Getting a stone to land precisely while navigating a 130-foot distance is tough,” Smith explains, emphasizing the skill involved.
Beyond competitiveness, curling fosters a sense of community, as emphasized by member Jessica Martin, who values the sportsmanship and camaraderie inherent in the game. Smith and his wife have embraced curling, traveling nationwide for competitions, including the 5U National Championships in Minnesota. Meanwhile, member Riley Galatis, who has been curling for eight years, speaks to its impact on his personal growth and teamwork skills, prompting him to relocate to Huntsville for its vibrant curling scene.
To further bolster its membership, Huntsville is planning a new facility dedicated exclusively to curling, which will provide ample ice time and enhance the experience for members. As Smith notes, the sport’s strategic elements attract a diverse crowd, including engineers and scientists, aligning well with Huntsville’s demographics. The Rocket City Curling Club looks forward to welcoming new enthusiasts and expanding its community in the coming years. For more information, visit Rocket City Curling Club.
