I-20 shootout and chase winds through two Alabama counties, ends after carjacking, standoff
Man and Woman in Custody After Police Chase and Gunfire Exchange in Alabama
A dramatic police chase across two counties in east Alabama ended Friday night with two suspects in custody after multiple shots were exchanged between law enforcement and one of the suspects. The incident began around 8:30 p.m. when deputies from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve an arrest warrant in Oxford. As officers pursued the suspect, he opened fire on them during the chase.
The pursuit initiated in Calhoun County and transitioned into Cleburne County, where local deputies joined. The situation escalated significantly on Interstate 20, culminating in a standoff when one suspect stood on top of a vehicle. The chase eventually led to a crash near the 199 mile marker on I-20. After the vehicle collided, more gunfire erupted, prompting the suspect to flee into a wooded area. Reports indicate that the suspect also carjacked a motorist during the chaos before being apprehended.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the exchange of gunfire. Authorities closed parts of the interstate as they conducted their investigation. The highway reopened around 1:45 a.m. Saturday, with further information expected to be released later in the day. The swift actions of law enforcement during this tense situation helped prevent any casualties amidst the violence.
