Ice and Snow Forecast in Alabama
Severe Weather Alert for Alabama: Ice Storm and Winter Precautions in Effect
Jim Stefkovich, Meteorologist at the Alabama Emergency Management Agency, has issued an Ice Storm Warning for Lauderdale, Colbert, and Franklin counties, effective Saturday at midnight until 6 PM Sunday. Additionally, Winter Weather Advisories and a Winter Storm Watch are in place for areas near and north of I-20 during the same period.
Precipitation is expected to start in northwestern Alabama between 2 AM and 9 AM tonight, spreading throughout the northern half of the state on Saturday and reaching statewide by Saturday night, ending Sunday evening. This storm is projected to bring 2-4 inches of “liquid” across northern Alabama and 1-3 inches in the southern regions, potentially causing localized flooding.
Freezing rain will dominate Saturday morning north of I-20, with some sleet mixed in initially. Up to an inch of ice is possible in the far northwestern counties, while southern areas may see less than 0.10 inch of freezing rain. Fortunately, temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by Saturday afternoon, easing ice concerns, though hazardous driving conditions near and north of I-20 will remain.
By Sunday, cold air will move into the northwest sectors, potentially leading to light freezing rain or snow in the northern half. Southern Alabama may experience thunderstorms with strong wind gusts and a risk of tornadoes. Cold temperatures will follow, with highs in the 20s to mid-40s and lows dropping to single digits in the north by Tuesday morning.
