Lions begin ASUN Softball Championship on Tuesday in Oxford
UNA Softball Prepares for ASUN Championship in Oxford
The 2025 Atlantic Sun Conference Softball Championship kicks off on May 6 in Oxford, Alabama, with the University of North Alabama (UNA) entering as the No. 9 seed. The Lions will face No. 8 Jacksonville in a first-round matchup at 12:30 p.m. The victorious team will advance for another game against No. 5 Austin Peay later that evening, with hopes of moving into the double elimination rounds that start on May 7.
This year marks a historic first for the ASUN tournament, featuring 10 teams from both the ASUN Gold and Graphite Divisions. The champion will be crowned on May 10.
UNA is looking to overcome a tough regular-season finish, having lost three closely contested games against Central Arkansas. However, the Lions have been competitive in prior tournaments, winning at least one game in the last three years and competing well enough in 2023 to reach the championship game.
The Lions aim to change the narrative, as historically, no lower seed has won the ASUN tournament. Under Coach Ashley Cozart, they maintain a strong performance record, secured a 30-20 season, and earned a spot in all six ASUN tournaments since joining in 2019.
Key players include senior Hailey Jones, who boasts a .323 career average, and pitcher Alivia Wilken, with a 2.51 ERA. UNA has an impressive track record against Jacksonville, winning five consecutive matchups. As the tournament approaches, the Lions are eager to make their mark and pursue their first ASUN title.
