Made in Alabama: Auto supplier plans to spend $430 million, create more than 1,300 jobs at former Gadsden steel mill site
Minth Group to Transform Gadsden Site into Major Automotive Manufacturing Hub
Minth Group Limited, a global automotive supplier, has announced a significant $430 million investment to establish its largest campus at a former steelmaking site in Gadsden, Alabama. This ambitious project will convert the 400-acre brownfield site, previously home to Republic Steel and Gulf States Steel, into a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to producing high-quality plastic and aluminum components for major automakers, including Hyundai and Kia.
The development is expected to create over 1,300 jobs, with an average annual wage exceeding $49,000, revitalizing an area that has experienced losses from major employers in recent years. Alabama Commerce Secretary Ellen McNair praised the initiative, citing the state’s strong automotive workforce as a catalyst for growth and innovation in the industry.
The Gadsden facility, which will span nearly 1 million square feet, plans to renovate the old steel mill, marking a transformative moment for the community. William Chin, Minth’s chief strategy officer, emphasized the company’s commitment to local partnerships and long-term economic benefits for the area. Mayor Craig Ford expressed his excitement about attracting Minth, calling it a “lottery win” for Gadsden.
David Hooks from the Gadsden-Etowah Industrial Development Authority highlighted the broader economic impact, stating that Minth’s choice of Gadsden signals a promising future for the region. Overall, this development represents a major step forward in revitalizing local industry and creating robust employment opportunities.
