Eight Sports Legends to be Inducted into Alabama Sports Hall of Fame
On Saturday, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame will induct eight distinguished athletes in Birmingham, including 2009 Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram, who highlights this year’s class. Ingram, born December 21, 1989, in Hackensack, NJ, made history as the first Alabama player to win the Heisman Trophy during his sophomore year. He concluded his NFL career with over 10,000 rushing yards and as a three-time Pro Bowler.
Joining him are notable inductees like Roberta Alison Baumgardner, the first female athlete to receive a scholarship at Alabama. Born December 13, 1943, Baumgardner was a trailblazer in women’s tennis, winning back-to-back collegiate singles championships in 1962 and 1963. Also honored is Otis Davis, a Tuscaloosa native, who shattered the 400-meter world record and won two gold medals at the 1960 Olympics.
Other inductees include NBA All-Star Mike Mitchell, with a remarkable college career at Auburn; Keith Butler, a standout linebacker and later a successful coach; Frank Warren, known for his defensive skills with the Saints; MLB veteran Butch Moore, who made history by stealing bases and hitting for the cycle in a single game; and PGA champion Jason Dufner.
This marks the 57th annual induction ceremony, celebrating the legacy and accomplishments of these remarkable athletes in Alabama’s sports history.
